Who Forgot to Fill the Baptismal Font 10/17/16

First thing I want to do is tell you a story. It is about a wonderful baptism we had this last week and how the Lord performs miracles. We had a baptism of someone the sister missionaries taught in our district and as we were setting up chairs one of the sister missionaries ran in and was kind of freaking out. She asked us if we had filled up the font....(cricket sounds). Nobody filled it up. Oh man. So we ran to the place to turn it on and we found out that it normally takes almost 3 hours to fill it up. We didn’t know what to do. Then I was like well we’ve got to try something. I ran with my companion. We started to fill up buckets and ran them down the hall and dump them in. After like 2 minutes I was soaked in sweat and I didn’t know what to do because it wasn’t really working. We decided to pray. We said a prayer and then said we would go as hard as we could for 30 minutes. If it wasn’t close or kind of the bishop said he was going to cancel the baptism. I really didn’t want that to happen. So we kept going. We were filling buckets in the sink in the bathroom and the janitor closet and I was running up and down the hall haha. One time I slipped and spilled like half the water on myself. Thirty minutes later the font was almost full. The bishop was like so confused. It was so awesome. I don’t think it was us that really filled it up because we spilled half the water in the hallway, but I know that if we have faith the Lord can work miracles.

The rest of the week was honestly kind of crappy. We had a really good investigator and then she randomly texted us and told us that she didn’t want to talk anymore and have anything to do with us. I was honestly so so sad. We tried calling her and she answered one time and then when she realized it was us hurried and hung up. It was kind of funny because like half way through the question of who is this she realized who it was and just got really quiet then hung up. All you can do is push forward. This happened like 5 more times with other investigators. I wanted to just be done. I think I have prayed more this week than ever before. One day I just felt at peace. And then I felt the spirit so strong.

I’ve seen some giant cockroaches and bugs. Lots of awful dogs. There are just normal types of birds here. Honestly it is just like super super poor United States here more or less and everyone speaks Spanish.  I actually like it a lot. I wouldn’t mind living here because everything is so so cheap like so crazy.

Sorry I didn’t get lots of pictures this week! We were super busy! I will get some good ones next week. The picture attached is a cake we made this week. The symbol is called puro bautismo. It means we just baptized. I also learned this week that this is like the hardest area. The missionaries before us kind of messed it up and so they put us here to start it over.

I know that even in the times of our trials the Lord is with us and will give us strength to push forward. I know the church is true, and that if anyone has a question about anything or lacks a testimony of something, if you work to develop it and do your part, I know that you can know the truth of anything you need.

A Letter To Elder Hawley 10/16/16

Hi Elder,

How has your week been? Any easier than last week? Did you get your package yet? I have had many respond to me about your letter last week and the fish head in the soup. So gross but so funny! What experiences and teachings did you have last week good and bad?

Guess what??? Daniel got engaged! Who would have thought he would have been the first of you boys to be getting married. We don't know a date yet, but we are all super excited for him.

Getting updates about our ward missionaries went well today in church. Thank you for the letter you wrote to the ward. Elder Willis is the next to come home. He will be home on Thanksgiving. Elder Despain will be leaving soon from the Provo MTC to go to St. Petersburg, Russia. Oh and Marissa Despain is putting in her papers to go on a mission. Dad has been working with her for a couple of months. So that is pretty cool. Malachi's farewell will be in two weeks already. Dad was invited to go through the temple with he and his family last week. 

Thank you so much for the missionary bear you made at Build A Bear with Kristy. What a surprise it was. I had no idea you went with her. I love surprises. It means so much and of course brings tears every time I hear your voice, but we are so glad to have it. Kristy and I went to a play Friday night and she gave it to me. She told me to make sure I told you she finally gave it to me. She said it took forever to get the badge made on it. It is super cute. It will be put up with the pictures and other things we have put together of you in our missionary display on the piano. 

Dad went with the youth to Cross E Ranch for their activity last week and met everyone you worked with. They all asked about you and said "Hi".

Megan went to Sadies and had a great time! It made up for the last fiasco of a dance she had for Homecoming. There were six couples and one of them was cousin Hayley and her date. 

Malia says she joined a club at school called "Mustang Morale". It is a new club this year. Club members get together to plan activities for the school and help with other things. She also was invited to join the Exel Team for gymnastics. It is not quite the Team competition, it's like a junior competition team. She meets two days a week for two hours each and really likes it.

Miles really likes gymnastics and goes once a week. He wanted me to tell you his school had a fun run on Friday as a school fundraiser. It was like the color fest you went to. They had big bags of chalk dust they threw on each other and ran around the track many times. Parents sponsored and donated money to the school. He said to tell you he was so messy. He had to soak in the bath to get clean. The water was bluish green. It was pretty funny. He also has a very loose front tooth. Hopefully he won't swallow this one haha.

Here is a quote for this week by Elder Marvin J. Ashton: "If we look in to each other's heart and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care. I think that is a good thought for missionaries.

A Letter To The Ward 10/10/16

I want to thank everyone in the ward for all the support and love that you have showed me in my life! The mission is going really great so far, and i have seen and felt the love of our heavenly father more than i can even express. I know that if we are living the way we need to be and we have the lord by our side we have nothing to fear. The world is going to  only get more unworthy and we only need to get stronger. I want to talk to the youth. Prepare for your mission now. Do everything you can to prepare, seminary is such a blessing so take full advantage of it. I love the church, just remember... the book is blue and the church is true... if you have any problem you can turn to the book of mormon and find your answer there. Love you all!!! Elder Hawley

The Book is Blue the Church is True 10/10/16

Well this week has been really hard I’m not going to lie. But with each step more you take up a mountain the more you can see. Haha sorry I am practicing my motivational speeches with my comp. I have learned so much. The one thing that I think is the most important is that through all the good and bad we have, we need to rely on the Lord in all that we do.

This week it rained a ton again and I tried to get a picture but doesn’t do any justice. We were in a taxi and we had to go on a completely different street than normal because the road was flooded out haha. I love it though.

We have eaten so much this week. I love food. Eating is one of my new favorite things to do, not that I didn’t like to before. In the pictures the bread is french toast with this fruit drink mix on it. In the last picture I am holding the tuna fruit from the inside of the cactus, my new favorite fruit.  Funny story that relates to the monster of the thing that is in our soup. We had a member lunch and she dropped off a ton of food and we had a big Styrofoam thing of soup. I had a little and so did my comp, it was pretty good. Later that night we were getting ready to throw it away and my comp wanted a little more and then put his spoon in and pulled that thing out. Haha it was so funny. It’s things like that that I will remember for a long time.

Just remember to never let any moment pass in life. Live every day to the fullest!

A Letter To Elder Hawley 10/09/16

Hi Elder!

How was your week? Did you get your package yet? For sacrament meeting this next Sunday we are getting an update from all the missionaries in our ward. If you could write a quick letter or if you have an experience you would like us to share, or both, please write and include it in this weeks email. It will be read in sacrament meeting. 

Megan has been working at Cross E Ranch every night and loves it. She mainly works in the concession stand since she has her food handlers permit but helps wherever too. Malia went with a friend this last Friday to the temple and did baptisms again. She also ate in the temple cafeteria and thought it was the best thing ever. Miles' favorite shows now are Pokemon and Power Rangers. He loves watching them and singing the songs as loud as he can. He is doing good in school but thinks it's so "long and boring". 

We really enjoyed conference and read the talk about Joy again as you suggested. It is a great talk and was referenced several times in church today too. We went for a drive to see the Fall leaves and listened to the Sunday afternoon session which was fun.

Read Alma 32:43...we hope this helps you this week. Keep being patient and look for the joy in all things. You are doing good. Also keep listening and following the spirit as you mentioned in last weeks letter which was awesome.  

We can't wait to get your email and pictures each week and hear about your week.  We love and miss you lots but know you are where you should be at this time.

I Believe I Can Fly 10/3/2016

Haha when we are contacting and someone lets us in and we teach them a lesson, when we leave and once we get in the street I sing this….”I Believe I Can Fly”.  Well this week has been super good. I first want to talk about General Conference. General Conference is the best thing ever. I know that when I was younger I always just took a nap but I wish that I would've payed more attention because of how great of a thing it is for everyone. It can answer any question you have and can answer questions you didn’t even know you had. When I hear the prophet and his apostles speak I know that the church is true and that through the church we can find happiness. I really like the talk about Joy. It was by Russell M Nelson, if you didn't get a chance to hear it please go listen to it. Haha this week was so great but also really hard. Like every week.

This week I was on an exchange with Elder Lara in a completely different area. We were walking back to the place where we were going to pick up the bus and we were walking on a huge long railroad track. I wish I would’ve had my camera because it was pretty cool, but anyways we were walking and I was looking around and saw a house and I felt strongly that we needed to go to that house. I kind of started walking over but then I realized that Elder Lara was way ahead of me and we were kind of in a hurry so I kind of just brushed it off. The thought came again so I turned around and Elder Lara saw me and asked what was up.  I told him that we should go down to that house and he happily agreed. We went down to the house and knocked and a lady answered and came out and she was obviously upset. We talked further with her and she told us that she has things in her life with her family going wrong and she had no idea what to do. We taught her the plan of salvation and she immediately accepted. It was so great. I know the church is true. 

Haha a funny story is that we were at the house of a family eating lunch and the dad speaks pretty good English since he works for the radio and the son is learning English. The dad asked me if I would say a prayer over the food in English so his son could learn. I was saying it in English and all was going great and then I just started saying it in half Spanish and half English and my brain was so confused. Haha it was frustrating but also a miracle at the same time.

The food is so great here. I am definitely getting chubby. Oh man it doesn’t matter how much you work out when you eat 16 tacos in one sitting. Haha the people just keep bringing food out and it’s not a bad thing because it is so good but sometimes it’s just so much. I tried a new fruit also. Called a tuna…so good. I bought some at the store, they are super cheap. They are the fruit from the inside of a cactus.

I know the church is true. I love you guys. I don’t know if I’m going to be able to send pictures. The computer is acting up. I will send double next week though!

A Letter To Dad 10/03/16

Elder Hawley

Hey I need some advice. I dont know what to do because i want to work so hard becasue i set a goal to baptise 200 people not becasue the number is important but i like to have a physical goal to work towards. I literally would study and work through the night if i could. But my comp does not want that. He is always singing bad songs and just is kind of lazy and i honestly dont know how much he really wants to be here. I dont know what to do. I think that i have only one week left with him though so that should be alright. I love him hes a great friend jsut not super focused.

 Sorry I didn't respond earlier. I got your email after you had stopped emailing  for the week. So here is my advice.  You are in a tough spot. It is important that you do all you can do.  Be ready and be an example to him the best you can. Try to see the good and the way he works best then support him the best you can. There are lessons to be learned. Being a good follower is important and it will teach you how to be a good leader. The lord is preparing you for the future work he has for you. Pray to heavenly father so you can learn the lesson that he has for you. It is no accident that he is your companion. He has things to teach you and you have things to teach him. Do your part the best you can and I know the lord will bless you and take care of the rest. Patience and love like the saviors example. Think how frustrated he must get working with us, and the apostles he served his mission with. I'm so proud of you and so excited for you and to see the experiences you are having. The lord is preparing you for great things. We love you. We pray for you always. Stay strong and be of good courage.

 dont worry about it! I have honestly had the hardest week of my life. I wanted to punch my companion in the face like a thousand times. I dont know if it is bad to say that or against the rules but i did. Haha i have never prayed so much in my whole life. I just want to find people to teach but i dont know how or cant because my spanish is mas or menos feo. I know that i am supposed to learn patiance from my companion and heavenly father has made that very clear. All i can do is love him and serve him the best i can. I am just getting up by myself and doing the daily stuff now. I make mistakes and do dumb things everyday and i know that now that is how heavenly father feels. I have never had more doubts in my life and never have felt the spirit as strong. thanks for the prayers i pray for you guys too. love you Elder Hawley.
