7 months...Born in Russia, Mexico, and the Cursed USA 2/27/17

I finished 7 months of my mission this week, (these are some of the places that people have said that I am from in the title of the email haha.) They just give me crap. There are lots of people who understand that most of the people from the United States aren’t racist but there are quite a few who think if you are white you hate Mexicans. It is so crazy how fast the time is passing. I cannot believe it. First I want to say how great it has been here so far, and how much I have learned about myself and the church. I know it is all true. 

This week has been great. We helped a family start to get baptized. We baptized the kids and the rest of the family is the next week! They are so awesome. We helped them this week build a new part of their house. In the baptism picture they aren’t smiling, but they are happy I promise. 

We were super close to the border this week. We took some pictures with a border sign and the Rio Grande. The river is between Mexico and Texas.

Also we had a special meeting this week en Thursday with all of the mission. President Russell M Neilson spoke. He couldn’t come in person like planned because of the inseguridad (insecurity)  but there was a transmission. I learned so much. He taught us about how we come from the children of Abraham and that it is our responsabilidad (responsibility) to bring people to the fold of God. If we keep this commandment we have, we will be blessed in every single way of our life. We learned that when we study the scriptures it ¨sharpens¨ our spiritual axes and we can progress faster in this life. I love the church so much and love the people here in Mexico.

There is a tradition to burn a tie when you finish 6 months haha. I forgot to send a picture of me burning a tie. I bought it for like 50 cents. So there’s that too.

Sorry this email is all over the place. The picture with all the kids on the stairs is a family that are being taught by a missionary in my district. We went on intercambios (exchanges) and they wanted to take a picture. They are so awesome. One of the little girls you can’t really see, but she is so smart and seriously so kind.

I am so glad to be here helping these amazing families. I miss you guys a lot, but just 17 more months haha. I hope you guys have a great week!

Increase Our Faith A Letter to Elder Hawley 2/26/17

Hey Elder!

No one can believe the picture of that tamale. It is huge!  How did they possible cook that thing??? Sounds like you are enjoying the food there, that is good. Make sure you drink plenty of water. Plus looking at the picture and your sunburn you probably ought to get some sun screen. Please apply it regularly.

Hope things are going well with the families you are teaching. We are continually being blessed here at home because of your service. You are bringing so many blessings to those that you love because of your service. Keep it up, you are laying a great foundation for your future. 

Not much new here at home but things are going good.  All of the snow melted and it warmed up nice, then of course it got cold and snowed again the last few days. We are definitely ready for Spring around here. 

Something for you to read and ponder this week. This is from part of a talk from Patricia P. Pinegar (a past general president of the primary):

What can we do to turn to the Savior? What can we do to increase our faith in Him? There are many things we can do. I have chosen just three:

• We can choose to believe.
• We can ask for help, then listen.
• We can practice turning to Him.

In the scriptures it says, “But without faith it is impossible to please him”; and to please him we must “believe that he is” (Heb. 11:6).

Choosing to believe is an important step in increasing our faith in the Savior. It has to be our choice. No one can make that choice for you. If I stand in front of a mirror and look myself in the eye and say, “I choose to believe in the Savior,” that helps me; then whenever I look in a mirror it reminds me of my choice.

Another thing we can do is to ask for help, then listen. Our Father and Savior want us to have more faith. Faith is a gift, but it must be sought after. We can seek after faith by asking for more faith in our prayers. Could we say, “Heavenly Father, please help me have more faith”?

Harder than asking is listening. We can listen in our hearts and hear Their voice. We can listen in the scriptures and hear Their word. We can listen to our prophet and leaders and hear Their testimonies of faith. We can increase our faith by “hearing … the word of God” (Rom. 10:17).

And third, we can remember to practice—practice turning to Him, practice thinking about Him. Increasing our faith does take more than choosing to believe and asking. It takes some kind of physical and mental action. It takes practice, diligence, and patience, and it takes obedience. We must be “doers of the word, … not hearers only” (James 1:22). We can practice living righteously by turning to Him, by thinking about Him, by following Him. And then we must help Him with His work by helping others. If we choose to turn to the Lord, to believe in Him, to follow Him, we can increase our Faith.

We hope all is well with you.  We pray for you. We love you and are so proud of the person you are and the job you are doing. Your letters are making a difference here at home. You are inspiring all those that read your letters . Keep up the good work. Miles said that we all miss playing games with you and he loves and misses you and be safe.  Megan and Malia said that they love and miss you and keep doing good.

Seize Each Opportunity A Letter To Elder Hawley 2/20/17

From Dad...So mom sent you my talk. After I spoke, President Hill gave an awesome talk about how within the plan of happiness Heavenly Father has individualized a plan for each of us. A plan that helps us develop into the person we need to be. He told us we need to seize each opportunity, learn from each challenge, and pray for the understanding and strength to learn from each opportunity we face. I know that is true. Your plan is for you to serve the people of Mexico right now. Seize the opportunity, put your All into it, and learn everything you can from this time. Heavenly Father is preparing you for your future.

ZACAHIUL 2/20/17

This week was super great, super hard, long, but great. The first thing is that it has been getting so hot. I am so sunburned, but the tan lines are cool dont worry. It was actually a good week, it was just hard. There are so many people here in Mexico that just don’t want anything to do with us and it is just a test of my testimony sometimes, but it is alright. I also have been sleeping a little bad because I’m just always thinking how I can help the people we have sometimes. It’s frustrating that we can’t help them more.

The title of the email is the name of a super cool tamale. It is just a giant one. This week after church we got a ride home from a super cool family in the church with all of our investigators. When we passed by their house someone in there family was making the tamale and gave us all some. It was so good. 

This week has been just normal. We have been teaching a super cool family of 6 and I have really come to love them a lot. They have been coming to church with us every week and it has been so great. They are super cool. I will send a pic with them the next week. They told me I look like the guy that reports the news in the tv haha.

Here is a picture of us in the back of a van. We were going to wash our laundry and a member offered us a ride so we all jumped in. He was joking with my companion and asked him if he wanted to cross the border.

I really love you guys and miss you a ton. If that doesn’t make you feel special just remember that out Heavenly Father loves you even more and he can help a lot more than I can. Just trust in his plan that he has for us and his timings.

Dad's Ward Conference Talk 2/18/17

I have often considered how it would be to coach Michael Jordan. How would you do it? What could you possibly teach him? How do you help someone that is more than you? I believe the only thing you could do would be remind them of the basics. These have been my thoughts and feelings as I have prepared this talk.

In priest quorum last Sunday the question, “What is the purpose of your life?” was asked. We had a lot of great answers: Serve others, Share gospel, Develop our talents etc.

Elder D Todd Christofferson taught: Being born again, unlike our physical birth, is more a process than an event, and engaging in that process is the central purpose of mortality. So what is the purpose of your life?

I Remember Bishop Larsen teaching about the many hats a person wears during his lifetime. Hats like employee, student, child, sibling, parent. The list goes on and on. He taught as we are putting on and taking off the many hats we wear, remember we should always be wearing the t shirt participating in the Plan of Salvation. Troy Taylor made this point perfectly when he told us of his experience at work and his partner’s comment, “This is work, not church”. Troy then explained to us he has made the goal to be the same person no matter what he is doing, the perfect example of wearing different hats but always sporting the same t shirt.

2 Nephi 2:27 reads, “Wherefore men are free according to the flesh and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life through the great mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil, for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself.”

It sounds so simple. Last week Keith McLean pointed out the simple things sometimes seem to be the hardest to do.  As I pondered more on this scripture I thought who would possibly choose captivity and death. Why would someone knowingly do that?  I have made a lot of decisions in my life and I don't remember any of them being that simple. Satan has a way of confusing or bedazzling the choice of captivity and death. He makes it sound appealing and exciting. He is crafty. I wonder if he scrapbooks? What would his face book page look like?  What would it say? My pondering sometimes needs a little self-control.  As I continued thinking about this scripture I noticed the word “all”, a three letter word. A word I can spell. It has footnotes that grabbed my attention. As I chased these footnotes I came across scriptures that talked about the atonement, scriptures that talked about God's purpose. For example Moses 1:39 reads “This is my work and my glory to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.” The Plan of Salvation is God's work; it’s his hobby, his passion. It is all that he does. He is perfect; he must be pretty good at it.

So our life’s purpose is to participate in the plan of happiness, but how do we do that? Choose between good and bad. Then repent if we make a mistake. I believe the Plan of Salvation is more than a test we must pass. Brian K Ashton in the last general conference said, “Repentance or the atonement of Christ is not just a backup plan in case our plan to live perfectly fails. Continual Repentance is the only path that can bring us lasting joy and eternal life.” So all the time I have viewed Repentance as an eraser has been wrong. True the atonement can wash away our sins, but it is so much more. The atonement allows us access to the Holy Ghost. Brother Ashton went on to say. “As our constant companion, the Holy Ghost gives us additional power or strength to keep our covenants. He sanctifies us, which means to make us free from sin, pure, clean and holy through the atonement of Jesus Christ. The process of sanctification not only cleanses us, but it endows us with needed spiritual gifts or divine attributes of the savior and changes our very nature, such that we have no more disposition to do evil.” So for me the atonement is something more than an eraser, something more than a way to fix a mistake after it has been made. It is also like sunscreen. Something I need to apply constantly, it not only heals but gives me access to the protection of the Holy Ghost. As the world becomes more and more wicked, I will need to apply this sunscreen more and more frequently. It can change my very nature. I have always thought how awesome it would be to be like the people of King Benjamin.  They were sanctified by the Holy Ghost to the point that they no longer had a desire to do evil, but desired to do good continually. If we could be sanctified in this way, no more desire to do bad, that would definitely be a plus on this journey through life.

So how can we have this mighty change occur in our life? Brother Ashton continued. “Each time we receive the Holy Ghost into our lives through faith, repentance, ordinances, Christ-like service, and other righteous endeavors, we are changed until step by step, little by little, we become like Christ.

I like to put things in a context that I can relate to. It makes it easier for me to grasp. We are here on this earth to participate in this mighty change. It is like remodeling your home. All (that simple three letter word) the materials and supplies have been provided and paid for by our Savior. We have the plans drawn up by the ultimate builder our, Heavenly Father. Talk about bonded, licensed, and insured. Years of experience, references. He has it all. The Holy Ghost is on board to do the heavy lifting. What could possibly go wrong?   How can we not be excited for the finished product? So if it really is that simple, why do we have such a hard time with it?

It is Satan; he seems to always get in the way distracting us, confusing us, and putting doubt into our minds. If he can get us to just stop trying or participating, he wins. So how do we combat this problem? I have come to the conclusion what I need is hope.  What is hope and how will that help? As a child I was taught that faith without works is dead. Faith is work, it is an action. So faith without works is not faith. What I believe is that faith without hope soon fades away. Discouragement sets in and our faith or action dies. Let me explain it this way. Think of a football game, one you have watched that had a fourth quarter comeback, one where there was a trick play. We have all seen one. Now think generally after the win the reporter always ask the superstar about the winning drive and that pivotal play. How did it feel? What were you thinking? Tell me about that last play? More than once I have heard the player say yah we have run that play more than a hundred times in practice , and it has never worked. That's how I picture hope, you know in the game when the coach sent in the trick play everybody in the huddle was excited, every player believed it was going to work and they were going to win.  Nobody was saying come on really you know how many times we have tried this, it never works. That's not how it goes down everybody is excited. They break the huddle, slap each other on the butt, and run to the line of scrimmage excited for the outcome. Running the play is faith, hope is the attitude they run it with. Void of this attitude of hope the play would surely fail and the game would be lost. Eventually the players would quit even running the play.

That's how we need to go through with our personal remodel. We allow the spirit in to get the renovations done. By exercising our faith, taking action, continually applying sunscreen (the ATONEMENT), making or renewing covenants, giving Christ-like service and living the best we know how. If this is done with hope, our faith or actions will endure the many setbacks that are sure to come. We will not get discouraged and quit or give up, allowing Satan control. One example my family is pretty good at family prayer on Sunday night. Now that we hear from Mitch on Mondays we do well that day too but by Friday it rarely happens. If we started each week with the attitude that we are never going to stick with it, we would eventually just give up. With no action or faith on our part, the sunscreen or atonement wouldn't be available to us. The spirit would be forced to leave the remodel or sanctification would stop. Our progress is damned and we would be headed straight for captivity and death. But if we start each week with the hope that this is the week we are going to succeed and win the game even though it has failed the previous thousand times we have tried, we show faith.  We are blessed with the power of the atonement, the Holy Ghost sanctifies us a little more, and we get a little closer to eternal life. I need to take the sacrament hoping that this time I will make it all week, not just until Sunday afternoon before I chase the spirit away. We just need to keep that hope going. The second we lose hope is the moment that we allow Satan in. He fills our minds with discouragement and doubt driving us to apathy and inaction. That is the only way he can win. We have been given All that we need. We have the ultimate contractor. So let's grab on to hope, exercise our agency, and make the covenants we need. If you’re not baptized, get with the missionaries. If you haven't been to the temple or your recommend is expired, let's get the problem fixed. Put on your All shirt participating in the plan of salvation.

Another Week Chugging Along, Member Missionary Work 2/13/17

The time is passing by so so fast. I don’t know, I feel like I am in a trance because the time is going by so fast and I am just trying to take advantage of it. We are working super hard. One of my good friends here in the mission got transferred to my district. His name is Elder Morales. He has been out the same as me, we got here together. I don’t remember where he is from but he’s cool. He’s from my generation. Love the guy.

We had a super good family night with a family and an investigator. It was super fun and the investigator loved it! Her name is Gabby and she’s awesome.

The food is super good like usual. There is this really good taco stand that we found that sells tacos for 8 pesos which it’s like less than 50 cents and they’re so good. The weather has been super super hot. It was super cold for like 2 weeks but that was it.

Something that I want to share is the importance of member missionary work. It is like the best thing ever in the mission when you find a member who wants to help, who gives references, who sits with investigators, and brings people to church. I just want to invite you guys to invite a friend to church. It honestly could change their life! I know the church is so true. Haha I get home every day so tired because I just want to help as many people as I can and because I know it can help everyone!

This week I didn’t take any pictures, I am sorry. I’ll take lots this next week.

Continue Sharing the Pattern A Letter To Elder Hawley 2/12/17

Hi Elder Hawley!

Sounds like things are going well. We are so proud of you and the great missionary you are becoming. It is so fun to see you in your pictures looking so happy, serving and baptizing. Keep up the great work you are doing and being the good example you are being. Let us know if you ever need anything. Also, if you just need to vent, we are always here for you. We want to hear the good and bad experiences you are having.

From Dad...It's ward conference this upcoming week, I have to give a talk in sacrament meeting next  Sunday. I'm terrified! I really do not like public speaking at all. I'm trying to figure out a topic. I'll send you a copy of my talk next week. I'm planning on writing it word for word. That way I won't get all nervous and mess it up. We talked today in priest quorum about our purpose on earth. Christ has a pattern. He invites us to come, learn of him, then serve. Come, follow me. Take my yoke upon you. Bear one another's burdens. That is what you are doing, sharing the pattern. Come learn of the gospel, follow the savior, and serve your fellow man.

It has warmed up quite a bit this week and rained a lot here. Most of the snow is melted in the valleys. There has been some flooding and mud slides in the mountains and especially up where Aunt Sherri lives and the Bear Lake area. 

Stay strong. We pray each night for your safety and success. Miles always prays that you and him will find your wallets too.

Kids Pictures 2/06/17

Broken Arm, No Problem 2/06/17

This week has been super fun. I don’t honestly remember a lot but it was good. We baptized a super awesome guy this week. His name is Omar. He has a daughter and he has loved going to church, and he is progressing so fast. It is so amazing to see the lives of people change as they start to receive lots of blessings.

I have learned a ton this week. Something that I have learned is that if we ask the Lord what our weaknesses are, he will show them to us. I learned in the hardest ways possible haha. But the thing that is more important is that he gives us strength to be able to overcome the challenges and make ourselves better!

This week I was walking and I turned to talk to my companion. I half fell in a huge mud puddle. I had to clean my shoes super good for the zone conference the next day. It rained super hard one day and it was so muddy everywhere! 

We found a super cool family who invited us to eat tamales and they forced us to eat so much haha. After eating I went to wipe one of my hands on my pants and she started to yell at me. I felt like I had a mom in the mission for a little bit.

Crazy Super Bowl Game A Letter To Elder Hawley 2/5/17

Hi Elder,

How are things going?  How was your week? It has been a really busy week for us between work, school, church stuff, and the kids activities. Malia had a mock gymnastics meet to see where she needs to improve for her upcoming competition meets. She did really well and scored high. She received many compliments of being very graceful on the beam and floor routines. Her dancing in the past really helped with that. She also found out that she is going to be one of the wives in the Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat play which involves several parts and dancing. She is super excited about that.

Megan went to the Sweethearts dance and had fun. She and her friend joined a gym (Planet Fitness) and they have been enjoying going to the gym every day. She is preparing to take the ACT test for Juniors at the end of February.

Miles is being the funny kid he always is. He plays games on Malia's old IPod and when Malia told him that he sure loves to play the games, he replied, "I'm obsessed with this IPod and they don't  call me the master for nothing". Haha

We had the Super Bowl party yesterday at Grandma and Grandpa's. It was the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons. We were routing for the Falcons. They were ahead the entire first half and at half time the Patriots trailed 28-3 but they completed the largest comeback in Super Bowl history, ended up tying the game, then winning in overtime which was also the first overtime game in Super Bowl history. We were so bummed the Falcons lost. What a crazy game! The cousins sure miss you being around to play with them!

This saying was on our church program yesterday, "If we partake of the sacrament in Faith, the Holy Ghost will then be able to protect us and those we love from the temptations that come with increasing intensity and frequency." Henry B. Eyring
