How are you? How was your week? We are doing well and the kids are excited to be out of school this week for Spring Break!
WOW...quite
the General Conference we had with overwhelming changes. Our letter to
you is based on General Conference in case you didn't get to listen to
or see much of it.
From
the 188th General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints...President Russell M. Nelson was formally sustained during a
"Solemn Assembly" as the new prophet and 17th president of the LDS
Church by members Saturday morning. In
a “solemn assembly” ritual, dating back to the 1800s, adult male
Mormons around the globe took turns standing according to their separate
Melchizedek Priesthood offices to show support for their new leader,
followed by adult women, male teens in their Aaronic Priesthood groups
and girls ages 12 through 17 in the Young Women program. Finally, all
members joined in together to sustain the LDS leaders.
Elder
Gerrit W. Gong and Elder Ulisses Soares were called as apostles of The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Saturday morning during the
church's annual general conference. Elder Gong is the first
Asian-American called as an LDS apostle, and Elder Soares is the first
Latin American called as an LDS apostle.
President
Russell M. Nelson announced significant changes to the structure of LDS
Church priesthood quorums-High Priests and Elders will now combine
together in one big Elders quorum. “We
have felt a pressing need to improve the way we care for our members
and report our contacts with them,” he said. “To do that better, we need
to strengthen our priesthood quorums to give greater direction to the
ministering of love and support that the Lord intends for his saints.”
President
Russell M. Nelson also announced that "home teaching" and "visiting
teaching" are being replaced with a new program called "ministering",
a more personalized approach to reaching out to members. Instead,
we will implement a newer, holier approach to caring and ministering to
others. We will refer to these efforts simply as “ministering.”
Effective ministering efforts are enabled by the innate gifts of the
sisters, and by the incomparable power of the priesthood." He went on to say the new program is centered on Christ-like love and care."Brothers
and sisters, we want to move resolutely toward watching over each other
in ways that encourage “bear[ing] one another’s burdens, that they may
be light; … [being] willing to mourn with those that mourn; …
comfort[ing] those that stand in need of comfort, and … stand[ing] as
witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that
[our brothers and sisters] may be in” with the pure love of Christ as
the true motivation for doing so.

spiritual uplift and growth.”

Russell Ballard-God has given us many precious gifts — including the
Sabbath Day, the sacrament, service to others “and the matchless gift
from God of our Savior” — and we need to treasure them.
